Birkenstock Footbed and Shoe Cleaner

Cleaning using the Footbed and Shoe Cleaner

The Footbed and Shoe Cleaner is specially formulated to help clean and maintain your Birkenstocks.

2 min read

As you wear your Birkenstocks, the footbed material may occasionally need cleaning. While Birkenstocks can handle light moisture during cleaning, they are not waterproof and aren’t designed to absorb excess water or product. Cleaning them carefully and avoiding oversaturation is key to maintaining their quality.

Our Footbed & Shoe Cleaner is specially formulated to be gentle on your Birkenstocks. The included sponge is designed to absorb just the right amount of water, preventing oversaturation while providing an effective clean.

For optimal results, begin by using the Suede Brush on the footbed to remove dirt and particles before applying the Footbed & Shoe Cleaner. This step also helps open the pores of the suede liner, restoring its texture and breathability. For Exquisite and Semi-Exquisite footbed liners, please refer to the specific care steps provided at the bottom of this page.

Step 1: Open the straps or remove the laces.

Step 3: Have a bowl of lukewarm water ready, cold water works too.

Step 4: Place the sponge into the bowl and allow it to absorb the water naturally. Once saturated, gently squeeze out the excess water.

Step 5: Shake the Footbed & Shoe Cleaner well, then spray the sponge 3–4 times.

Step 6: Squeeze the sponge, working in the product until suds form.

Step 7: Dab the suds generously onto all areas that need cleaning, spreading the product evenly across the surfaces.

Step 8: Rinse the sponge thoroughly in clean water, then squeeze out any excess.

Step 9: Use the damp sponge to gently wipe away the foam from the liner.

Step 10: Leave your Birkenstocks to dry in a shaded ventilated space overnight away from direct heat or sunlight as this can cause warping. If they still feel damp, allow additional time for drying.

Step 11: For suede footbed liners you can use the Suede Brush to restore their soft texture. To maintain Exquisite and Semi-Exquisite footbed liners, apply a light layer of Leather Conditioner and allow it to absorb overnight.

Measuring Tips

We recommend using a pencil or a ballpoint pen.

A thick pen can distort the result.

It’s best to measure your feet in the evening as they may expand during the day.
